On Day 1, the journey begins early in the morning from Dehradun, with a pick-up at 6:00 am from Prince Chowk. Travelers will embark on a scenic 260 km drive to Gangotri, one of Uttarakhand's four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites. The drive, lasting approximately 8-9 hours, offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas, dense forests, and the iconic Tehri Dam. Gangotri, located at 3,100 m (10,200 ft), is not only the starting point for the Kedartal trek but also a revered site along the banks of the Bhagirathi River. After reaching Gangotri in the evening, participants will check into a guesthouse, enjoy a warm meal, and rest for the night.
Today is dedicated to acclimatization, helping your body adapt to the high altitude before the trek ahead. Begin the morning with visits to Pandav Gufa, Gauri Kund, and Surya Kund, then enjoy the spiritual ambiance at Gangotri temple, one of the Char Dhams, and witness the Ganga Aarti. Exploring Gangotri’s peaceful surroundings and taking short walks around the town will ease the altitude adjustment, all while enjoying the natural beauty and rich heritage of this Himalayan pilgrimage site.
Start the morning trek from Gangotri to Bhoj Kharak, a journey filled with steep climbs, ancient forests, and a mix of thrilling challenges, especially the Spider Wall section. Leaving the Gangotri valley behind, the trail immediately begins ascending, bringing you closer to the heart of the Himalayas. Passing Bhairav Ghati Bridge, you'll hike alongside the Kedar Ganga River, which roars powerfully on your left. The dense forests of Bhojpatra trees provide shade and historical wonder, as their leaves were once used for ancient scriptures and provide insulation for locals. After completing this exhilarating section, you’ll arrive at the Bhoj Kharak campsite, surrounded by the towering presence of Thalaysagar Peak and a dense valley of Bhojpatra and Rhododendron trees.
Today’s trek from Bhoj Kharak to Kedar Kharak offers a change of pace and scenery. Starting with a short, steep ascent, you’ll climb beyond the tree line, entering beautiful open meadows bursting with seasonal blooms, especially vibrant in autumn. This route is relatively easy compared to the rocky terrain of previous days, making it a more leisurely hike, though the thin air at this altitude requires a steady pace. The Kedar Ganga River accompanies the trail, adding a soothing soundscape as you near the campsite. The journey continues with panoramic views of Thalaysagar and Brighupanth Peaks, creating perfect photo opportunities.
Today is the highlight of your trek as you journey to the enchanting Kedartal Lake, a pristine glacial lake known for its vibrant emerald color. The route is challenging, with continuous steep ascents over rocky, barren terrain, so it demands endurance and focus. With no greenery and sparse water sources, be prepared with sufficient water to stay hydrated. The trail is marked by three ridges, adding an adventurous edge to the day’s journey. The lake, mirroring the majestic Thalaysagar, is a surreal sight, offering panoramic views of surrounding peaks like Mt. Manda, Brighupant, Gangotri, Bhagirathi, and Mt. Meru.
Begin your day with a memorable sunrise at the Kedar Kharak campsite, where the first light bathes the surrounding peaks, creating an unforgettable vista. After breakfast, embark on the final leg of your journey, a descent back to the sacred town of Gangotri. The 14-km trek will take 8-9 hours, with steep declines demanding focus on the rocky paths. As you descend, be mindful of loose rocks and navigate carefully, savoring the scenic landscape that has accompanied you throughout this incredible journey.
Following the same path as your ascent, the route offers plenty of water sources, allowing you to stay hydrated and energized as you traverse through the beautiful valley one last time.
After a rejuvenating stay in Gangotri, it's time to bid farewell to the majestic mountains. Enjoy your final morning in the sacred town with a warm cup of tea, soaking in the last moments of serenity before the journey back. After checking out from the guesthouse, our vehicle will take you back to Dehradun. The 250 km drive may take 7-8 hours, depending on traffic, as the route can get busy, especially near popular stops.

The trek involves a mix of steep ascents, rocky terrains, and high altitudes. The path to Kedartal, especially, requires navigating through barren landscapes, steep ridges, and rocky paths. It is essential to be in good physical condition and prepared for unpredictable weather. An acclimatization day at Gangotri helps prepare for the higher altitude.
The best time for this trek is from May to October when the weather is relatively mild, and the trail is accessible. The summer months offer clear skies and a good opportunity to witness the lush landscapes. Avoid the monsoon season due to the risk of landslides and heavy rains.
Yes, there are sufficient water sources along the trail, especially from Gangotri to Bhoj Kharak and between Kedar Kharak and Gangotri. However, it’s always wise to carry enough water with you, especially when crossing barren stretches or higher ridges with limited sources.
There may be limited or no network connectivity during the trek, especially at higher altitudes. Gangotri town has some network coverage, but once you're on the trail, you may be out of reach of cellular networks. It's advisable to inform family or friends of your itinerary in advance.
Accommodation is typically in guesthouses, campsites, and tents throughout the trek. At Gangotri and Bhoj Kharak, you will stay in guesthouses, while at higher altitudes like Kedar Kharak and Kedartal, you'll camp in two-person tents. Camping in remote areas provides a more immersive experience with nature.
