The best time for the Chadar Trek is from January to February, when the Zanskar River is completely frozen, providing the ideal conditions for walking on the ice. This is also the coldest period in Ladakh, ensuring the stability of the frozen path.
The Chadar Trek is considered moderate in terms of physical difficulty but challenging due to the extreme cold and icy terrain. Trekking in sub-zero temperatures, especially at night when it can drop to -30°C, demands both physical endurance and mental resilience.
The highest point of the Chadar Trek is at Nerak Waterfall, which is located at an altitude of 3,850 meters (12,631 feet). Proper acclimatization in Leh before starting the trek is essential to avoid altitude sickness.
The Chadar Trek covers a total distance of approximately 62 kilometers (round trip), with trekkers walking on the frozen Zanskar River for 7 days. The daily trekking distance ranges from 13 to 16 kilometers depending on the itinerary.
While prior trekking experience is not mandatory, it is highly recommended. Trekkers should be in good physical condition and prepared for the challenges of walking on ice and dealing with extremely low temperatures.
Accommodation includes hotel stays in Leh for acclimatization and camping in tents during the trek. The campsites are located along the Zanskar River, often near natural shelters like caves, where trekkers sleep under the stars in sub-zero conditions.
